Saruni Samburu is easily one of the most stunning lodges in northern Kenya. It is also not for everyone. Before you book, you need to know how Kalama actually works, how tough those stone steps get in 35°C heat, and which villa will not leave your knees aching.
Stepping onto the open deck, you notice the wind coming off the escarpment before you see the view. Looking south toward Mount Ololokwe across thousands of acres of red volcanic scrub, you understand quickly why this hillside camp feels nothing like a riverfront lodge.

If those numbers sit above your budget, our roundup of the luxury lodges in Samburu and the best tented camps covers every tier in the ecosystem.
Saruni Samburu sits on a granite ridge in Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy. Built as the pioneer lodge on land leased from the Gir Gir Group Ranch, it operates in direct partnership with local pastoralists, and bed-night levies fund Gir Gir community school bursaries and solar-powered livestock boreholes. Kalama itself works as an open corridor connecting Samburu National Reserve with the northern conservancies.
Standard flight packages land at Buffalo Springs, which means a longer drive through the public park gates. Flying private, or on a carrier that lands at Kalama airstrip, drops the transfer to 15 minutes across private tracks with no gate queue.
Staying at Saruni includes the Kalama conservancy fee. Drives into Samburu National Reserve proper require the separate non-resident 24-hour reserve permit on top. We sync drive departures so your 24-hour ticket clock never triggers a double charge.
Saruni’s six stone villas are built directly into the escarpment boulders. Open canvas fronts pull cool air off the plateau, though the night wind gets genuinely crisp in July and August.
“saruni samburu villa picks” / “saruni samburu room layout accessibility”
Choosing the right villa at Saruni Samburu determines your daily physical comfort, room layout, and proximity to central lodge amenities. Built directly into a steep granite escarpment, options range from flat, single-level units designed for limited mobility to secluded edge-of-cliff suites ideal for honeymoons. This quick-reference breakdown helps you match your physical needs, group size, and privacy preferences with the correct villa before booking.
Villa Category | Villa Numbers | Key Feature & Physical Consideration |
Mobility-Friendly | Villa 1 | Flat vehicle parking at entrance, single-level interior pathways, and zero stone stairs |
Family & Dual Entrance | Villa 2, 4 & 6 | Two-bedroom units; Villa 2 & 6 offer separate entrances joined by a lockable central lounge |
Couples & Honeymoon | Villa 3 & 5 | Built into granite boulders; Villa 5 features a outdoor shower and suspended valley deck |
Waking at 5:00 AM in Villa 3, that open canvas front gives you an incredible view of Ololokwe. It also lets in a real bite of cold. Between July and August you want a heavy fleece with your morning coffee.
Keep food locked in the room safe. Vervet monkeys and dwarf mongooses check open verandas through the day, and they are quick.
The kitchen runs on strong Italian roots brought by the lodge founders, blended with fresh Kenyan produce delivered regularly from farms near Mount Kenya. The food is a genuine highlight rather than a footnote.
Buried underground and covered in red Samburu soil, the hide sits at the edge of a busy waterhole. It is elephant-proof, holds up to eight photographers, and comes with beanbags, camera mounts, and night lighting.
There is a specific thrill when an eight-thousand-pound bull walks up to the water while you are sitting three feet below him. You can smell the wet earth. You can hear him swallowing. Our photographic safari packages build hide sessions into the daily schedule rather than treating them as an add-on.
In the dry months (July–October and January–March), this waterhole is an elephant magnet with dozens of animals daily. In the rains (April–May and November), wildlife spreads across the conservancy, hide activity quietens, and general bush tracking picks up instead.
Two rock-hewn pools on different levels of the escarpment, both fed by natural rainwater runoff:
Because Saruni sits inside a private conservancy, guests get activities banned inside the public reserve:
Reteti tip: Saruni’s position makes it ideal for a morning visit to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in nearby Namunyak. Book the earliest feeding slot for the best light and a quieter session with the keepers.
Our head tracker Moses, who has spent over a decade on these tracks, tells guests to ignore the open plains at dawn and watch the dry laggas instead.
“kalama conservancy rules vs samburu national reserve” / “saruni samburu night game drives”
Staying at Saruni Samburu in Kalama Wildlife Conservancy provides unique safari activities that are legally prohibited inside the main Samburu National Reserve. This matrix highlights the operational differences and activity permissions between both conservation areas.

Underground Photo Hide | Sunken 8-person waterhole hide with night lighting | None available in reserve |
Nocturnal Activities | Night spotlight drives & UV scorpion walks allowed | Strictly prohibited (6:30 PM park closure) |

Setting & View | Escarpment / high granite ridge | High ridge above the Ewaso Nyiro | Riverfront forest inside the reserve |
Vibe & Style | Open-air Italian-design stone villas | Moroccan-influenced tented suites | Classic luxury canvas tents |
Key Unique Asset | Underground photo hide & UV walks | Private plunge pools & quad biking | High density of riverfront wildlife |
Best For | Photographers, couples, active travellers | High-end romance, spa, exclusivity | Classic riverfront game viewing |
